Basic English Sentence Structure: Subject, Verb, Object (SVO) Rules & Examples

Basic English Sentence Structure: Subject, Verb and Object (SVO) with Hindi Examples

English sentence बनाते समय केवल सही words जानना काफी नहीं है; उन्हें सही order में रखना भी जरूरी है। इस lesson में आप Subject, Verb और Object का अर्थ, basic SVO pattern, be-verb sentences, objects और complements का अंतर, place/time words की position, negative sentences और questions के शुरुआती patterns सीखेंगे।

हर rule के साथ Hindi explanation, English examples, incorrect-versus-correct sentences और answer key सहित practice दी गई है।

1. What Is Sentence Structure?

Sentence structure का अर्थ है sentence में subject, verb, object और अन्य शब्दों का व्यवस्थित क्रम। English के simple statements में सामान्य pattern अक्सर Subject + Verb + Object (SVO) होता है।

  • Subject: किसके बारे में बात हो रही है या सामान्य active sentence में कौन action करता है।
  • Verb: action, event या state बताता है।
  • Object: action किस पर या किस चीज़ पर होता है, यह बताता है; हर verb को object की जरूरत नहीं होती।

Example: “Neha reads a story.”

  • Subject = Neha
  • Verb = reads
  • Object = a story

Hindi में हम अक्सर “नेहा एक कहानी पढ़ती है” कहते हैं, जहाँ object verb से पहले आता है। English में सामान्यतः “Neha reads a story” में verb object से पहले आता है। इसलिए Hindi-to-English translation करते समय word order पर ध्यान देना जरूरी है।

2. Basic SVO Pattern: Subject + Verb + Object

जब verb किसी object पर action करता है, तो statement में सामान्य pattern Subject + Verb + Object होता है।

SubjectVerbObjectComplete sentence
IlikemangoesI like mangoes.
ShereadsbooksShe reads books.
TheyplayfootballThey play football.
The teacherexplainsthe lessonThe teacher explains the lesson.
Wewatcheda filmWe watched a film.

ध्यान दें कि tense और subject के अनुसार verb form बदल सकता है—जैसे “I play” लेकिन “She plays”। यह lesson word order पर केंद्रित है; verb forms को tense lessons में विस्तार से पढ़ें।

3. Not Every Sentence Needs an Object

कुछ verbs बिना object के भी complete sentence बना सकते हैं। ऐसे verbs को कई contexts में intransitive verbs कहा जाता है।

  • Birds fly.
  • The baby cried.
  • My grandfather sleeps early.
  • The guests arrived.

इन sentences में subject और verb मिलकर complete thought दे रहे हैं। इसलिए यह नियम याद रखें: हर English sentence में object होना जरूरी नहीं है।

4. Sentences with Be-Verbs: Subject + Be-Verb + Complement

किसी की पहचान, स्थिति या quality बताने के लिए be-verbs—am, is, are, was, were—का प्रयोग हो सकता है। ऐसे sentences में verb के बाद आने वाला शब्द object के बजाय अक्सर complement होता है, जो subject के बारे में जानकारी देता है।

SentenceSubjectBe-verbComplement
Riya is a student.Riyaisa student
The flowers are beautiful.The flowersarebeautiful
I am ready.Iamready
The room was quiet.The roomwasquiet

“Riya is a student” में “a student” Riya की पहचान बताता है। इसे direct object नहीं कहा जाता। इसी तरह “beautiful” flowers की quality बताता है।

5. Useful English Sentence Patterns

English sentences के कई common patterns होते हैं। SVO सबसे उपयोगी शुरुआती pattern है, लेकिन हर sentence केवल इसी pattern में नहीं बनता।

PatternExampleExplanation
Subject + Verb (SV)Birds fly.Object के बिना complete sentence.
Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)Arjun kicked the ball.Action का object “the ball” है।
Subject + Be-verb + Complement (SVC)Meera is happy.“happy” subject की state बताता है।
Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object (SVOO)Dad gave me a gift.“me” recipient है; “a gift” दी गई चीज़ है।
Subject + Verb + Object + Complement (SVOC)They elected Ravi captain.“captain” Ravi के role को बताता है।
Subject + Verb + Adverbial (SVA)The children are outside.“outside” location बताता है।

इन patterns के नाम याद करना शुरुआत में जरूरी नहीं है। पहले examples में subject, verb और बाकी जानकारी पहचानने का अभ्यास करें।

6. Where Do Place and Time Words Go?

Place और time बताने वाले phrases अक्सर sentence के अंत में आ सकते हैं। लेकिन emphasis या natural expression के अनुसार order बदल सकता है। Beginner के लिए नीचे दिए गए सामान्य patterns उपयोगी हैं।

  • We study at home every evening.
  • The children played in the park yesterday.
  • My father goes to work by bus.
  • She will meet us at the library tomorrow.

Place/time phrases को एक ही fixed order में रखना हर situation में जरूरी नहीं है। यदि कई details हों, तो sentence को साफ़ और natural रखने की कोशिश करें।

7. Word Order in Negative Sentences

Negative sentence बनाने के लिए अक्सर helping verb के साथ “not” का प्रयोग किया जाता है। Exact pattern tense और verb के प्रकार पर निर्भर करता है।

PositiveNegative
I play cricket.I do not play cricket.
She likes tea.She does not like tea.
They are ready. They are not ready.
He went home.He did not go home.

ध्यान दें: “does not” या “did not” के बाद main verb का base form आता है—“does not like”, “did not go”। “does not likes” और “did not went” गलत हैं। Tense के अनुसार negative sentence बनाना आगे अलग से सीखें।

8. Word Order in Questions

English questions में helping verb अक्सर subject से पहले आता है। Wh-questions में what, where, when, why, who और how जैसे question words भी आ सकते हैं।

StatementQuestion
You are ready.Are you ready?
She likes music.Does she like music?
They live here.Do they live here?
He went home.Did he go home?
You live in Delhi.Where do you live?

Question में “do/does/did” का उपयोग करते समय main verb का base form रखें: “Does she like music?” न कि “Does she likes music?”

9. Common Word-Order Mistakes

IncorrectCorrectReason
I mangoes like.I like mangoes.Object सामान्यतः verb के बाद आता है।

Does he plays cricket?Does he play cricket?Does के बाद base verb आता है।

12. Quick Revision

  • English simple statements में सामान्यतः subject पहले और verb उसके बाद आता है।
  • SVO का अर्थ Subject + Verb + Object है, लेकिन हर sentence में object नहीं होता।
  • Be-verb के बाद noun या adjective subject की पहचान या स्थिति बता सकता है; यह अक्सर complement होता है।
  • Place और time की जानकारी अक्सर sentence के अंत में दी जाती है।
  • Negative sentences और questions में helping verbs का order महत्वपूर्ण है।
  • Do/does/did के बाद main verb का base form आता है।
  • सही word order के साथ capitalization और punctuation भी जाँचें।

Frequently Asked Questions

Is English always Subject–Verb–Object?

No. SVO is a common pattern for many statements, but some sentences have no object, some use a complement, and questions or commands may have a different order.

What is the difference between an object and a complement?

An object is connected to the action of a verb, as “a book” in “She reads a book.” A complement completes the meaning by identifying or describing the subject or object, as “happy” in “She is happy.”

Why do we say “She likes” but “Does she like”?

In a simple present statement, “she” normally takes “likes.” In a question with “does,” the tense is carried by the helping verb, so the main verb uses its base form: “Does she like?”
