Types of Sentences in English Grammar: 4 Types, Rules, Examples and Exercises

English sentences को उनके purpose और structure के आधार पर अलग-अलग प्रकारों में बाँटा जाता है। इस complete beginner lesson में आप statements, questions, commands/requests और exclamations के साथ-साथ simple, compound और complex sentences भी सीखेंगे। हर type की पहचान, punctuation, examples, common mistakes और answers सहित practice शामिल है।

1. What Is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. Sentence में words का क्रम अर्थपूर्ण होना चाहिए और writing में उचित capital letter तथा end punctuation का प्रयोग होना चाहिए।

  • Ravi is reading. — एक statement.
  • Are you ready? — एक question.
  • Please listen carefully. — एक request/instruction.
  • What a lovely day! — एक exclamation.

Sentence types को समझने का पहला तरीका है पूछना: speaker क्या कर रहा है—बता रहा है, पूछ रहा है, निर्देश दे रहा है या भावना व्यक्त कर रहा है?

2. Four Types of Sentences by Purpose

1. Declarative Sentence (Statement)

Declarative sentence किसी बात, तथ्य, राय या जानकारी को बताता है। यह affirmative या negative हो सकता है। सामान्यतः इसके अंत में full stop (.) आता है।

  • The Earth moves around the Sun.
  • My sister lives in Jaipur.
  • We do not waste water.
  • I think this book is useful.

2. Interrogative Sentence (Question)

Interrogative sentence सवाल पूछता है। इसके अंत में question mark (?) लगाया जाता है।

  • Are you ready?
  • Where do you live?
  • Why is the child crying?
  • Have they finished their work?

Yes/No questions अक्सर helping verb से शुरू होते हैं—“Are you…?”, “Do they…?”, “Can she…?” Wh-questions में what, where, when, why, who और how जैसे words आते हैं।

3. Imperative Sentence (Command, Request, Instruction or Advice)

Imperative sentence आदेश, अनुरोध, निर्देश, सलाह या आमंत्रण देता है। इसमें subject “you” अक्सर implied होता है, इसलिए उसे लिखना जरूरी नहीं होता। अंत में full stop (.) आम है; strong command में exclamation mark (!) भी आ सकता है।

  • Open your notebook.
  • Please help me.
  • Turn left at the next street.
  • Always speak politely.
  • Do not touch the hot pan.

4. Exclamatory Sentence (Strong Feeling)

Exclamatory sentence खुशी, आश्चर्य, दुख, प्रशंसा या अन्य तीव्र भावना व्यक्त करता है। इसके अंत में exclamation mark (!) आता है।

  • What a beautiful painting!
  • How quickly the time passed!
  • That was an amazing performance!
  • What a surprise!

हर exclamation mark वाला sentence केवल exclamatory grammar pattern नहीं होता; context भी मायने रखता है। उदाहरण के लिए, “Stop!” एक imperative command है जिसे जोर देकर कहा गया है।

3. Comparison Table: Purpose, Form and Punctuation

TypePurposeExampleCommon punctuation
Declarativeबात बतानाShe is a doctor.Full stop (.)
Interrogativeसवाल पूछनाIs she a doctor?Question mark (?)
Imperativeआदेश, अनुरोध या सलाहPlease sit down.Usually full stop (.)
Exclamatoryतीव्र भावना व्यक्त करनाWhat a kind person!Exclamation mark (!)

4. Same Idea, Different Sentence Types

एक ही topic पर purpose बदलकर अलग प्रकार के sentences बनाए जा सकते हैं। उदाहरण के लिए, “the window” के बारे में:

  • Declarative: The window is open.
  • Interrogative: Is the window open?
  • Imperative: Please close the window.
  • Exclamatory: What a large window!

ध्यान दें कि हर sentence में केवल punctuation बदलने से type नहीं बदलता; word order और speaker का purpose भी बदल सकता है।

5. Types of Sentences by Structure

Sentences को clauses की संख्या और उनके संबंध के आधार पर भी classify किया जाता है। यह purpose-based classification से अलग है।

1. Simple Sentence

Simple sentence में एक independent clause होता है। इसमें compound subject या compound verb हो सकता है, लेकिन clause एक ही होता है।

  • The baby is sleeping.
  • Riya and Aman play chess.
  • The dog barked and ran away.

2. Compound Sentence

Compound sentence में दो या अधिक independent clauses होते हैं। इन्हें and, but, or, so जैसे coordinating conjunctions या उचित punctuation से जोड़ा जा सकता है।

  • I was tired, but I finished my homework.
  • The bell rang, and the students left the classroom.
  • Hurry up, or you will miss the bus.

दो complete sentences को केवल comma से जोड़ना सामान्यतः comma splice कहलाता है। उदाहरण: “I was tired, I went to bed.” इसे “I was tired, so I went to bed” या “I was tired. I went to bed.” लिखें।

3. Complex Sentence

Complex sentence में एक independent clause और कम-से-कम एक dependent clause होता है। Dependent clause because, although, when, if, since, while जैसे words से शुरू हो सकता है और अकेले पूरा विचार नहीं देता।

  • I stayed home because it was raining.
  • When the bell rang, the students stood up.
  • Although she was nervous, she spoke clearly.
  • If you practise daily, you will improve.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence

Compound-complex sentence में कम-से-कम दो independent clauses और कम-से-कम एक dependent clause होता है।

  • Although it was late, we continued studying, and our teacher answered our questions.
  • I called my friend when I arrived, but she was already asleep.

School level पर कई courses मुख्यतः simple, compound और complex sentences पर ध्यान देते हैं। Compound-complex sentence को आगे की practice के लिए जानना उपयोगी है।

6. Purpose and Structure Are Different Classifications

Purpose बताता है कि sentence क्या काम करता है; structure बताता है कि clauses कैसे व्यवस्थित हैं। इसलिए एक sentence को दोनों तरीकों से describe किया जा सकता है।

SentencePurposeStructure
The children are playing.DeclarativeSimple
Are the children playing?InterrogativeSimple
Play carefully, and follow the rules.ImperativeCompound (two coordinated clauses/commands)
I stayed inside because it was raining.DeclarativeComplex
What a beautiful day it is!ExclamatoryOften treated as a simple exclamatory clause in school grammar

7. Punctuation and Capitalization Rules

  • Sentence का पहला अक्षर capital लिखें: “we are happy” → “We are happy.”
  • Statements के अंत में सामान्यतः full stop लगाएँ।
  • Direct questions के अंत में question mark लगाएँ।
  • Strong emotion के लिए exclamation mark का उपयोग करें, लेकिन हर sentence में नहीं।
  • Introductory dependent clause पहले आए, तो उसके बाद अक्सर comma लगाएँ: “When the class ended, we went home.”
  • दो independent clauses को comma और coordinating conjunction के साथ जोड़ा जा सकता है: “I called her, but she did not answer.”

8. Common Mistakes and Corrections

IncorrectCorrectExplanation
Where you are going.Where are you going?Direct question में word order और question mark जरूरी हैं।
Please to sit down.Please sit down.Imperative verb का base form इस्तेमाल होता है।

Frequently Asked Questions

How many types of sentences are there in English?

By purpose, school grammar commonly teaches four types: declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory. By structure, sentences are commonly classified as simple, compound, complex and sometimes compound-complex.

Is every question an interrogative sentence even if it has an exclamation mark?

Usually, a direct question ends with a question mark. Punctuation can vary in expressive writing, so consider both the sentence form and the speaker’s purpose rather than relying on punctuation alone.

What is the difference between a compound and a complex sentence?

A compound sentence joins independent clauses. A complex sentence contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
